I’m Richard W. Baker.
I'm a seasoned design leader & manager committed to growing design and innovation teams' influence, scale, and output to improve business results and the customers' experience. I fuse strategy, design, and technology to help teams solve difficult problems. I have 15 years of experience in helping enterprise organizations amplify the impact of design in their business, products, and culture.
I strive for outstanding design and flawless execution. I believe design is strategy made visible. I believe there is more to business than just profit.
I believe design is a team sport. I believe diverse perspectives translates into stronger products and a better workplace. I build teams like I build products—focusing on users and outcomes, striving for perfection by iteratively incorporating feedback.
I'm a life-long learner. I have an intellectual curiosity, with the ability to find and create meaning, bridging theory and practice to bring innovation to life.
These principles have shaped my style of leadership. They've increased my ability to build dynamic and successful cross-functional teams, and have enabled me to lead through times of growth, uncertainty, and change, building key partnerships along the way.
Currently, I’m the Global Head of Design for GE Transportation, leading an award-winning team of researchers, designers and strategists that fuse business strategy and design thinking to drive innovation in a 150+ year-old industry. Myself and the team curate user experience, focusing on world-class design, user-driven insights and innovative execution to win customer loyalty.
A few things I’m proud of
Built a passionate, diverse, and balanced creative team that fuses humanity into industrial applications (55% male, 45% female, 9 nationalities).
Scaled the design team to 25+ across three studios, supporting a $75mm product portfolio, 5 P&Ls, and over a dozen product lines.
Infused design in top-level business decisions by delivering regular enterprise-wide strategies for product portfolios, aligning to long-term business vision and near-term objectives
Partnered with Apple to establish the first-ever high school internship program in GE, mentoring students in professional skills, design thinking, and the latest technology.
